Issue
#28
Greetings!
Picking articles for each issue is always a difficult choice… we get comments from readers asking for all kinds of things. For the Holiday issue, it is always the same debate—More Santas! Less Santas! (Sounds like a beer commercial.) For this issue I think we hit a great cross-section of carving interests.
We have some fascinating profiles, including a look into the wild world of Howard Solomon, found-wood artist Anna Bradley, and chain carver Elmer Marting Sr., who may just hold a world record for chain carving (his son puts out a challenge to everyone to discover a larger collection).
We also have three technique articles that will keep our readers at the top of their game: Drawing a Caricature from a Photograph, Painting a Bluegill, and Joe Dillett’s look into keeping your tools sharp.
Painting a Bluegill by Rushing Reichert
And this issue wouldn’t be the same without Santas and holiday carvings. We have a holiday relief by Ivan Whillock, two different Santa projects (Wayne Shinlever and Richard Keller), holiday ornaments by Bill Jaquays, and a fantastic Nativity scene from Dave Disselbrett. Also included in this fine issue is a Victorian floral relief from

Steve Mikulas, an Ol’ Don Burgdorf bonus pattern, and a coming events section with another entertaining cartoon from Lou Asner.
NEW this issue: We have developed a handy Project Index that includes the projects from all past issues of Carving Magazine.
All in all, I am very proud of the selection of articles in this issue. Hopefully, it has the right mix for you. If you have a compliment, please drop me an e-mail; if you have a complaint, please remember that it is the holiday season (smile!).
Happy Carving!
