Greetings!
It is really difficult to put together each issue of Carving Magazine. I see all these cool projects, and I just want to run to my workbench and start carving instead of doing my work.
This issue is no different. Seeing the detail in Dale Kirkpatrick’s golf ball faces (page 14) makes me want to practice carving some new expressions right away. Reading through Rick Wiebe’s article on carving caricature hair (page 52) makes me want to shave all my figure carvings down and put some life into their locks. And Russ Hewitt’s gouge chip carving (page 74) has taught me a whole new style of carving.
Carving Magazine can be used to create wonderful carvings by following the step-by-step instructions, or it can be a source of inspiration to get your blood moving again.
Inspired by Carving Magazine's "gold mine of information," Susan Alexander from Orlando Park, Illinois, contacted me about the possibility of writing a column devoted to beginner carvers. Susan passionately referred to the hints and tips that can be found in every issue of this magazine as "diamonds"—a treasure trove of information that has helped in the advancement of her own carving skills. Her new column, "Let’s Talk Carving," debuts in this issue (page 57). In each column, Susan plans to "dig through the gold of past issues" and feature a few of these diamonds for our new carvers. She will also share her carving experiences and offer tips from her unique perspective.
